Review of Microgaming’s Game of Thrones Slot

Author: Corey Miller, 04. October 2024

We all have heard about the TV series Game of Thrones. I personally love the show and was more than thrilled to learn that Microgaming has created a slot version of it. Based on this hit HBO series, I knew that the Microgaming’s Game of Thrones would be a huge hit with online slot fans. The game has 5 reels and either 15 paylines or 243 Ways to Win. Feature-wise, I would emphasise the free spins bonus feature where you can choose from four houses, each entailing their own characteristics with stacked icons, win multipliers and free spins.

  • Two Game Variations
  • Free Spins and Multipliers

In this review, you are going to learn more about the Game of Thrones slot, namely its features, graphics, animations, RTP and paytable. The payline and Ways-to-Win versions are also compared and the game itself is compared to other similar slots. I should also point out that Game of Thrones is also available on mobile and table devices and can be played on the go.

Features of the Game of Thrones Slot

Game of Thrones is an action-packed video slot from Microgaming software provider. You can play either the 15-payline version or the 243-ways one. The slot is based on the HBO’s most popular TV series under the same name that are based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series. The TV show has so far won many nominations and awards and is one of the most popular series of all time. The special features in the slot are themed around the four popular houses of Westeros – Baratheon, Stark, Lannister and Targaryen – and each house comes with certain benefits.

Software: Microgaming Progressive jackpot: No Bet Range: 15p – £3 / 30p – £6 per spin

Reels: 5 Autoplay: Yes Animation: 10/10
Free Spins: Yes Quick spin: Yes Sounds: 10/10
Bonus Rounds: Yes Mobile: Yes Final Score: 9.2

As a huge fan of the series, I’m not disappointed by the level of detail in the game. The visuals are magnificent and there is also a room for clips from the TV series. The fierce rivalry between the four houses it presented to the maximum only with less gore compared to the actual series. I could also hear the famous theme song throughout the game which perfectly complements the entire slot. The game is indeed graphically advanced, the symbols are all nicely displayed and, overall, it offers a thrilling online slot experience.

Symbols, RTP and Volatility

The slot has the typical lettered symbols which are the lowest paying ones, as well as symbols associated with GoT such as the house sigils. Naturally, they are the highest paying. In particular, if you trigger a winning combination of lettered symbols, you can win anything from 2 to 100 times your bet. However, it’s best to hunt down the symbols of the four houses because five Targaryen Dragon icons win you 300x your bet, five Stark Wolves earn you 400x your bet, five Lannister Lions symbols give you 500 times your bet and five Baratheon Stags win you 600x your stake. Moreover, five GoT wilds on a single spin can earn you 1,000x your bet.

The return-to-player percentage of the Game of Thrones slot is around 95.5%. This is pretty high which means that the slot is quite generous. Simply take a look at its paytable to see how generous it is. Furthermore, the game’s volatility is medium so pretty good payouts appear regularly. Also, all types of players can play the slot, regardless if they are low, mid or high roller ones. The betting range is wide and everybody can experience the slot for real money. If you find the game a bit confusing, I recommend that you try it in free play mode.

Special Features

The main attraction of GoT is the free spins feature activated by getting three Game of Throne logo scatters. This feature is themed around the four houses of Westeros. In particular, House Baratheon gives you 8 free spins with 5x multiplier and the Baratheon icon is stacked to 3. House Stark gives you 14 free games with 3x multiplier and the Stark symbol is stacked to 5. Furthermore, House Lannister wins you 10 free spins with 4x multiplier and the Lannister icon is stacked to 4. Lastly, House Targaryen gives you 18 free games with 2x and the Targaryen symbol is stacked to 6.

Each of these features can be retriggered and the max you can win is 20,250x your bet. Furthermore, the slot also has other special features. For example, if you land on two Game of Thrones icons in any position, you will get a random cash prize. Lastly, the game has a gamble feature where you can see clips from the TV series as you travel through the kingdoms of Essos and Westeros. Each correct guess between heads or tails doubles your win. You can double up to four times if lucky.

GoT on Mobile Devices

Just like many Microgaming slot titles, Game of Thrones is also available on mobile devices and tablets, in particular, on handsets that are powered by Android and Apple’s iOS. I had no problems loading the game on my Samsung Galaxy S5, although I have heard that some players have problems with the sound when playing the game on their iPhones. The best way to find out is to test the game on your device and see if it loads fast and runs smoothly. The biggest difference between the online and mobile version of GoT is that the mobile title is missing the gamble feature. Therefore, I would recommend the online version. Nevertheless, if you really like to play it on the go, you should go for it. The slot’s theme is also beautiful on the small screen as it is on the larger ones and it has the bonus features themed around the four houses just like the online version.

Game of Thrones – 15 Paylines or 243 Ways to Win?

As mentioned earlier, Microgaming created two versions of the video slot Game of Thrones. The first one has 15 paylines and can be played from as little as 15p up to £3 per spin while the other version has 243 Ways to Win and its bet range starts from 30p and goes up to £6 per spin. There is little difference between the two versions. In general, they both have the same stunning graphics and audio, free spins bonus features with multipliers and stacked symbols based on the four houses and they both provide thrilling gameplay.

Perhaps the biggest difference, besides the difference in their bet range and number of paylines, is their payouts. This can be closely seen if you observe the paytables of both slot versions. You will notice that in the 15 pay-line version, in the base game, you can claim 10x your bet and in the free spins bonus, you can win over 3x multiplier. However, this version has a smaller number of paylines compared to the 243 Ways to Win version. In particular, you can win 5,000x your bet in the free spins in the former version, while in the latter with more pay-lines you can win 20,250x your bet. Still, the 15-payline version has a better RTP compare to the 243-ways one, making it the better choice.

Microgaming has done an incredible job of capturing all that’s exciting and thrilling about the hit series. The slot has stunning graphics and I particularly love the clips from the TV show as well as the original soundtrack. Also, watch out because big wins are coming, especially if you trigger the special features.

GoT and Its Similarity to Other Slots

Game of Thrones is a unique branded slot designed in partnership with HBO. Microgaming is popular for creating unique and exciting branded slots such as the Jurassic Park which also has 5 reels and 243 Ways to Win. However, the latter slot differs from GoT mainly in its Parallax Scrolling effects which make the game come to life. Another attractive feature GoT is missing is a progressive jackpot, like the one found in Mega Moolah. This slot has a four-tier progressive jackpot which can instantly make a player multimillionaire. GoT also differs from the popular slots of other providers such as IGT. For instance, IGT’s Da Vinci Diamonds has a unique Tumbling Reels feature GoT is missing.

Other Great Slots You Can Try

Mega MoolahMega Moolah is a 5-reel, 25-payline video slot from Microgaming, popular for its four-tier progressive jackpot. Last year a British soldier became £13.2 million richer when he triggered the game’s Big One. He bet only 25p on the slot and thanks to his incredible luck, he scooped the multimillion jackpot.
Jurassic ParkJurassic Park is themed around the blockbuster movie under the same name. It is developed by Microgaming and has 5 reels and 243 Ways to Win, just like GoT. The slot is the first of its kind to use the Parallax Scrolling effects. It is set in a deep jungle and the free spins features have animated environments.
Da Vinci DiamondsDa Vinci Diamonds from IGT is a unique slot which stands out from the crowd with its Tumbling Reels feature – symbols fall from above and winning ones are replaced by thumbing icons until there are no more winning icons to replace. Other features in this slot are the free spins and wilds. Read the review here.
